That distinction matters because it is the boundary between clearing the old structure and starting the new one. Once the old pilings are out of the ground, there is nothing left in the footprint to remove, and the crews move on to putting new supports in rather than taking old ones out.

According to Beach Talk Radio News, the next phase is driving 108 new concrete pilings into the ground, using a vibratory hammer followed by a diesel hammer to seat each one, which will serve as the foundation for the new pier. Crews currently anticipate a pace of about three pilings per day, though both outlets note the rate may vary based on field conditions and how construction is actually progressing once it starts. Work is proceeding from the landside end of the project out toward the pier's far end, according to WGCU's reporting.

At three pilings a day against a total of 108, that phase alone represents weeks of steady work before the structural frame of the new pier is even complete, well before any decking, railings or shade structures go on top of it.

WGCU reports that a 150-foot safety perimeter is established around the active work area each morning and taken down again at the end of the workday, specifically for pile-driving operations. Flaggers are stationed on site to direct pedestrians and motorists safely around the work. The public is being encouraged to use hearing protection during pile-driving activity, given how loud repeated hammer strikes on a concrete pile can be at close range.

Nothing about this week's update changes the county's stated completion target, which has been described as late summer 2027, weather and field conditions permitting.

Nobody can honestly put a number on what a specific stage of pier construction does to nearby property values, and it is fair to be skeptical of anyone who tries this early. What is verifiable is narrower: a public infrastructure project that broke ground last month has now reached actual foundation work, with a specific pile count and a stated daily pace, rather than sitting at the planning or site-prep stage it was at even a few weeks ago.

That is a concrete measure of progress on one piece of the island's rebuild. It is a separate question from what any particular home or condo near Fort Myers Beach's north end is worth, and it should be weighed as one data point rather than a reason to rush a decision either way.
