NCH Expands Cancer Care Across Its Downtown and North Naples Campuses, With Radiation Oncology Due in 2027

NCH Expands Cancer Care Across Its Downtown and North Naples Campuses, With Radiation Oncology Due in 2027

What Did NCH Announce About Cancer Care in Naples?

Naples Comprehensive Health, the hospital system most people here still call NCH, is expanding its cancer program across both of its main campuses in Naples. NCH announced the plan in a news release dated September 30, 2026, and Gulfshore Business reported the details on October 1.

According to the release, NCH is adding a breast medical oncologist, expected to start in January, and is recruiting two breast surgeons over the coming months. It is also expanding gastroenterology services focused on gastrointestinal cancers, strengthening thoracic surgery for lung and chest cancers, growing cardio-oncology, and expanding infusion and patient navigation. The largest single addition is radiation oncology, a service NCH describes as new to its program.

NCH President and CEO Paul Hiltz framed the expansion around a regional gap. He said in the release that the share of cancer patients who leave Southwest Florida to receive care "signals a significant unmet need in our region."

Where Will Each New Service Be Located?

The expansion is spread across downtown Naples and North Naples rather than concentrated in a single new building. According to Gulfshore Business:

  • Downtown Naples: the existing oncology unit at NCH Baker Hospital, along with the Lutgert Pavilion East and West buildings on the downtown campus.
  • North Naples: NCH North Naples Hospital on Immokalee Road becomes the base for breast surgical oncology.
  • Vanderbilt Beach Road: an outpatient breast program working alongside NCH Gynecologic Oncology, which opened its North Naples practice in October 2025.

Neither the release nor the report described a new hospital tower or a groundbreaking. This is a build-out of services inside facilities NCH already operates, which is one reason the timeline is measured in months rather than years.

When Do the New Cancer Services Open?

Per Gulfshore Business, NCH expects services to begin rolling out in early 2027, with radiation oncology opening in spring 2027. Additional subspecialty services are planned over the next six to nine months.

The program is led by Dr. Javier Muñoz, who joined NCH on September 1, 2026, and previously directed lymphoma services at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, according to the report. "Cancer care is most effective when specialists work together from the beginning," Muñoz said in the NCH release.

Gulfshore Business also reported that the expansion is backed by a philanthropic campaign that is roughly halfway to its goal, and that NCH is leaning toward the name NCH Cancer Institute, depending on donor naming opportunities. Both of those details are still in motion, so treat the name in particular as provisional until NCH confirms it.

How Does This Fit With the Northwestern Medicine Collaboration?

This is not NCH's first move in cancer care. In October 2024, NCH announced a collaboration with Northwestern Medicine on cancer services, and the current expansion builds on that work, according to Gulfshore Business. The North Naples gynecologic oncology practice that opened in October 2025 was another step along the same path.

Read together, the pattern is a hospital system steadily adding specialties that patients have often traveled to reach. Whether that changes how many people still travel will depend on recruiting, on how quickly each service actually opens, and on what each patient's own physicians recommend. Nobody can promise that outcome today, and I would not try to.

Why Does Hospital Access Matter When You Buy a Home in Naples?

When I sit down with buyers relocating to Southwest Florida, the conversation is rarely only about the house. People want to know how far they will be from the beach, from the airport, from the grocery store, and from the hospital and specialists they expect to use. Medical access is one of the practical questions that decides which part of a market feels right, and it deserves the same attention as commute and flood zone.

That is why a hospital system adding services is news for anyone weighing a move here, even though nobody can honestly put a number on what it does to the value of nearby homes. What it changes is concrete: more specialty care offered locally, at addresses buyers can actually map from a home they are considering.

Naples is a long, spread-out market. A home near the Vanderbilt Beach Road corridor or off Immokalee Road sits close to the North Naples campus, while homes closer to downtown and the Fifth Avenue South area are a short drive from the downtown campus. If proximity to either matters to you, it is worth checking drive times at the hours you would actually travel, because season traffic on US 41 and Airport-Pulling Road changes the picture considerably.

What Should Naples Buyers Watch Next?

Three things are worth following as this expansion moves forward:

  • The radiation oncology opening. It is the headline addition and is slated for spring 2027. Watch for NCH to confirm a date and location.
  • Specialist arrivals. The breast medical oncologist is expected in January, and the two breast surgeons are still being recruited. A service is only as available as the people delivering it.
  • Insurance networks. If you are moving from another state, confirm which Naples providers your coverage includes before you settle on a neighborhood. That is a question for your insurer, not for me, but it belongs on the same checklist as the home inspection.

Thinking About a Move to Naples?

If you are deciding where in Naples to land, my guide to buying a home in Naples walks through how the different parts of the market compare.
