Beaches of Southwest Florida

The longest run of accessible beach of any of these cities, and the easiest to use day to day if you live in Collier County, because of the resident parking permit.

• Naples Pier and Lowdermilk Park, both in the city, are the two most used and the two that fill first.
• Clam Pass Park is reached by a boardwalk through mangroves rather than straight off a car park, which keeps it quieter and is the point of it.
• Vanderbilt Beach and the North Gulfshore Access serve North Naples, with Conner Park nearby.
• Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park, at the north end, is a state park rather than a county one: a separate entrance fee, a different feel and a pass at the end of it.

Seven miles of it, and the only one of these cities where the beach is effectively the whole town.

• Lynn Hall Memorial Beach Park sits at the busy north end by the pier.
• Bowditch Point Park is at the very northern tip, where the island meets Matanzas Pass.
• Lovers Key State Park, 8700 Estero Boulevard, is at the southern end towards Bonita. A state park with its own entrance fee, and the quietest option on this stretch by some distance.

The shelling island, and that is not marketing. Sanibel runs east to west rather than north to south, which is unusual on this coast and is why shells pile up here instead of passing by.

Seven public beach parks: Lighthouse Beach Park at the eastern tip, with the lighthouse, a fishing t-dock and a boardwalk through wetland; Gulfside City Park mid-island off Casa Ybel Road; Tarpon Bay Road Beach Park; Bowman’s Beach Park, reached across a bridge from the car park and the quietest of them; Blind Pass Beach Park and Turner Beach Park at the Captiva end; and Causeway Beach Park on the way in.

All of Sanibel’s major beach parks are open again. Turner Beach was the last to reopen, on 25 April 2025, which closed out the recovery that began after Hurricane Ian. That is worth stating plainly because a lot of what is written about Sanibel online still describes the island mid-repair.

Parking is paid at the public accesses and Sanibel residents have their own arrangement, which is one of the practical differences between owning here and visiting.

No Gulf swimming beach in any of the three, and it is better to say so than to stretch the word.

Fort Myers does have San Carlos Bay and Bunche Beach Preserve, 18201 John Morris Road, and it is worth knowing what it is rather than being disappointed by it. It is a tidal flat on the bay, not a Gulf beach: shallow, muddy at low water, and one of the best birding sites in the county. People who go for the birds love it and people who go expecting Naples do not.

Estero has no coast of its own, and is minutes from Lovers Key and Bonita Beach. Cape Coral is built on canals rather than the Gulf, and its water is for boats rather than for swimming off a beach.

If being able to walk to sand matters to you, say so early and it narrows the search fast. If it does not, these three give you considerably more house for the money. See Estero, Fort Myers and Cape Coral.

Ask yourself one question honestly: do you want to walk to the beach, or is a fifteen-minute drive fine?

The honest answer moves the search more than any other single preference, because Gulf-front and near-Gulf are different price brackets, different insurance, different construction requirements and, on the islands, a different relationship with bridges and storms. A great many people say beachfront, visit twice, and buy a lake community twenty minutes inland with a bigger house and a lower bill. A great many others would never be happy doing that, and they should not.
